n8n vs Botpress: Automation or Chat Agent?

Quick take: if the deliverable is a customer-facing chat agent that needs real escalation rules, a specific node that hands a conversation to a human the moment confidence drops or a customer asks for one directly, Botpress gets you there with less custom wiring. If that chat step is one part of a larger automation that also needs to update a CRM, log to a spreadsheet, or notify a team on Slack, n8n's AI Agent node plus its 400+ integrations make it the stronger foundation. We built the same FAQ-and-escalation support flow in both to see where each one actually held up.
What n8n and Botpress actually are
n8n is a node-based workflow automation platform that's been in active development since 2019. You assemble triggers, app integrations, and logic branches on a canvas, and its AI Agent node, added as the category grew, handles LLM-powered reasoning as one node type among hundreds rather than the platform's central idea.
Botpress pairs a visual flow builder with an LLM-powered reasoning layer: an agent follows a scripted path for known intents and falls back to freeform reasoning for anything the flow doesn't cover. Its studio has an open-source core a team can self-host, though most run the managed cloud instead for hosted inference and analytics. Our Botpress vs Voiceflow comparison covers how it stacks up against the leading voice-first alternative if phone-based conversation is part of your evaluation too.
Comparison table
| n8n | Botpress | |
|---|---|---|
| Core design | General automation platform, AI Agent node added | Visual flow builder plus LLM reasoning fallback |
| Self-hostable | Yes, free | Yes, open-source core (most run managed cloud) |
| Escalation to a human | Build it yourself from conditionals + a notification node | Dedicated node, first-class and explicit |
| Free tier | Free self-hosted; cloud free trial | 500 incoming messages/month, 1 seat, $5 AI credit |
| Entry paid plan | Cloud starting around $24/month | Plus, starting around $150/month plus metered AI spend |
| Integrations | 400+ app nodes (CRMs, spreadsheets, messaging) | Fewer, aimed at support/helpdesk handoff |
| Best for | An AI step inside a broader business workflow | A standalone customer-facing chat agent |
Building the same support flow in both
We built an FAQ-answering agent for a small ecommerce brand: pull answers from a help-center knowledge base, hold a natural conversation, and escalate to a human the moment a question falls outside the documented scope. In Botpress, the flow builder made that escalation logic explicit and fast to define, a specific node that hands off to a live-chat queue once the model's confidence drops below a threshold. Getting it tuned right took most of an afternoon, mostly because deciding exactly when to hand off is a judgment call that needs testing against real questions, not because the tool made it hard.
The same flow in n8n took longer to get the escalation piece right. Its AI Agent node answered from a Vector Store-backed knowledge base cleanly enough, but routing to a human required chaining a confidence check, a conditional node, and a Slack or email notification step ourselves, there's no single purpose-built "escalate" node the way Botpress has one. Where n8n pulled ahead was everything downstream of the handoff: logging the conversation to a CRM record and notifying the right team channel took native nodes with no custom code, work that would have meant a webhook out of Botpress to get the same result.
Pricing reality check
Self-hosting n8n is free beyond your own server, and its cloud plans start around $24/month for a starter tier. Botpress's free pay-as-you-go tier covers very light testing at 500 messages a month with a small AI credit included, but the next step up, the Plus plan at roughly $150/month, is a much bigger commitment, and that's before the metered AI spend both platforms pass through on top of the base price. For a team expecting moderate chat volume from day one, that gap is worth modeling before committing to either.
When NOT to use n8n
Skip n8n if the entire deliverable is a customer-facing chat agent with real escalation requirements. You'll spend real time rebuilding handoff logic from general-purpose conditionals and notification nodes that Botpress already gives you as a dedicated, purpose-built piece.
When NOT to use Botpress
Skip Botpress if the AI piece is one step inside a larger business automation that also needs to touch a CRM, a spreadsheet, or a dozen other apps as part of its logic. Its integration catalog is thin outside the support use case it's built around, and you'll be writing custom webhooks for territory n8n already covers with a node, plus paying the larger jump to its Plus tier for volume n8n's starter cloud plan would have handled at a lower price.
Which should you pick?
Choose Botpress if you're building a text-first support or FAQ agent and want fine-grained, explicit control over when a conversation escalates to a human. Choose n8n if that chat capability is a component inside a broader automation that also needs to move data between other business systems; our guide to building a WhatsApp AI agent with n8n covers a similar conversational build from that angle.
Check current plans directly before committing, since Botpress's metered AI spend shifts with usage: n8n and Botpress both publish current pricing and docs worth reading first. If neither is quite the right fit, our Botpress alternatives roundup and our best no-code AI agent builders guide cover more ground beyond this direct comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Can n8n build a chatbot like Botpress?
To a point. n8n's AI Agent node, chat trigger, and memory options can assemble a working conversational bot, and for a simple FAQ-style flow it's a reasonable choice. Where it falls short is escalation: Botpress has a dedicated node for handing a conversation to a human the moment confidence drops, while n8n requires wiring that logic yourself from conditionals and a notification step.
Is Botpress good for anything beyond customer support chat?
Not really. Botpress is built around a scripted-flow-plus-LLM-fallback model aimed squarely at conversational agents, support bots, FAQ assistants, lead-qualification chat. It has some integration options, but nothing close to n8n's general-purpose node catalog, so using it for non-conversational automation means fighting the tool's actual design.
Which is cheaper for a small team?
n8n, in most cases. Its self-hosted option is free beyond server costs, and its cloud plans start around $24/month with no usage-based AI surcharge baked into the platform fee. Botpress's free tier works for very light volume, 500 messages a month, but the jump to its $150/month Plus plan is a bigger step, and that's before metered AI spend on top.
Can Botpress and n8n work together?
Yes, and it's a sensible split. A common pattern is building the conversational agent in Botpress, where its escalation and flow logic are strongest, then calling out to an n8n workflow via webhook for anything that needs to touch a CRM, send an internal notification, or run a multi-step business process the conversation triggers.
